Complexity and Human Health – Part 6, Taking Health-Conscious Action

Welcome to Lesson 6 - our final lesson here in this short course!

Listen to the audio and/or read the lesson down below. Note 3 images are included that you will find useful.

In the last lesson we built up this key model, linking our behavior to the body's ability to continue regulating energy across systems supporting the body. The result is metabolic homeostasis and healthy functioning over time 🙂

Expanded RSM - Healthy

Image 1: The Reprogrammed Systems Model of Energy Regulation and Metabolic Function - describing how healthy behaviors support the body's ability to properly regulate energy within and across systems, in turn leading to metabolic function and a lifetime of good health.

We also saw the model that demonstrates what happens when we choose unhealthy behaviors. These lead to energy dysregulation, metabolic dysfunction, and the arising of chronic disease.

The Reprogrammed Systems Approach is designed to help you learn healthy behaviors so that you can halt your journey down the unhealthy pathway and instead live your life supported by healthy, balanced, and regulated systems!

Let's take a look at it, including how you can use it to take action that better supports your metabolic health.

The Reprogrammed Systems Approach

Image 2: The Reprogrammed Systems Approach - describing the overarching goal that is learning to choose healthy behaviors that support the body's ability to properly regulate energy within and across systems, in turn leading to metabolic function and a lifetime of good health. To do this, we simultaneously need to stop producing unhealthy behaviors that lead to energy dysregulation, metabolic dysfunction, and chronic disease.

The above model describes The Repogrammed Systems Approach, in which we look at the higher-level functioning that drives good vs. poor metabolic health.

Recall from previous lessons that we use the system that is metabolic health because it ties directly to the many common diseases that plague our modern world.

This is to say that if we can take action to support our metabolic health, we automatically become capable of taking control (to a great, but not complete degree) of our fate in regard to whether we follow the common path that is the development of disease diagnoses. *See Important Footnote*

Now that we understand the approach, let's ask the most important question of all:

What does it actually mean to take healthy action that supports balanced and regulated metabolic systems?

The answer - well, I'm going to have to break it up for you.

The first part is going to be very straightforward. That is, it will take just a few short minutes to tell you exactly what you can do to take action that supports your metabolic health.

For many of you, this short answer could be all you need to go on making healthy decisions, spending the next decades supported by a healthy body!

For others, you may need a bit more assistance, because here's the thing:

When it comes to behavior change, us humans are often really bad at hearing what we need to hear and going out and actually doing it. I know, as a health coach I should probably be pumping you up and cheering you on as I give you this simple answer to go out and change everything!

But I'm not that kind of coach. I'm the kind of coach that focuses on data, hard facts, and reality. And, the reality is that you likely need more than just the simple answer I am about to provide you.

If that's the case, we'll chat more about it soon, including what you can do to become capable of taking action aligned with The Reprogrammed Systems Approach.

But, for now, here's what I can give you: the clearest answer I have for what you can do to go transform into that healthiest self -  the one supported by balanced, regulated systems that are able to maintain homeostasis over time.

Are you ready for it?

If you are ready and willing to go become your healthiest self, here's what you need to know.

For most individuals, becoming a healthier individual begins here:

  • Learn to build your diet based on whole, nutrient-dense foods
  • Establish habits to move your body regularly and dynamically
  • Routinely practice a balance of stress and rest

In other words, most individuals would benefit from releasing all the noise out there and instead focus on establishing these key healthy behaviors.

Once these healthy behaviors are established, then that individual may benefit from some extra work focusing on their own specific lingering aspects of poor health.

But that comes later, if necessary. For now, your task is to begin with step 1.

Once you've gotten these three key practices down, or if you need help with this first step, let's talk.

To get started making healthier decisions, here are the three things you can do:

  1. Build your diet based on whole, nourishing foods
  2. Move your body, both regularly and dynamically
  3. Practice a balance of stress and rest
